Historic Profiles: Travis Heights

Travis Heights is a neighborhood located in one of Austin zip codes most estimates, 78,704. The area near the downtown and Lady Bird Lake makes it an attractive place to live, and the new Emma Long Center for the Performing Arts is a few blocks north of area, opposite Barton Springs Road. Auditorium Shores, a lovely outdoor amphitheater which hosts festivals and concerts is next to the Long Center, and is also within walking distance of the Travis Heights neighborhood.

Easy access to the Lady Bird Lake hike and bike paths and access to the Zilker greenbelt is also advantageous for residents of the region. The district dates back to the beginning of the century, with dramatic growth in 1920 and 1030, and many historic houses of the period are still standing.

One of the most influential residents and well known in the neighborhood was John Henry Faulk, and his boyhood home was on the spot where the green pastures, a charming restaurant with a historic and beautiful foliage and motives are currently located. Another resident well known before, Charles Whitman, also grew up in the neighborhood of Travis Heights, and went on to infamy as the shooter Elite Tour in the 1960s.

The neighborhood boundaries are generally considered to South Lamar, South Congress, West Oltorf, and Barton Springs Road in the heart of south central Austin. The largest institutional development in the district is the school for the deaf in Texas, which includes 65 acres of land and was established in 1856 and surrounded by South Congress, South First, Barton Springs Road and Elizabeth Street.

Grace to frequent flooding of the Colorado River before the construction of dams to help control the waters of the river, the land was very cheap, therefore a very diverse group of people populated the area, and many churches are addressed to a specific ethnic group, like African-Sainte-Anne Methodist Episcopal Church and the nearby Goodwill Baptist Church, who are both on Newton Street. A small group of Hispanic families installed in the neighborhood around 1940, when the San Jose Catholic Church was founded at the corner of Mary Street and South Third Street.

Mission style stone is now called the Holy Name of Mary Church and Orthodox Church still has a thriving parish, many of whom are descendants of the settlers.

Since the recent development of SOCO and SOLA entertainment and shopping districts, which are respectively of South Congress and South Lamar local residents have access to more restaurants, vintage shops, nightclubs, cafes, and antique shops. Some of the best known institutions of Austin are still located on South Congress, as the seat of the local newspaper, the American-Statesman, and a safe seat and a few shops, like Boots Allen, who was in the region for years and years.

Here, a rather eclectic shops, like Lucy in Disguise as diamonds, a workshop costumes, and Bohemia, a great vintage shop and the shop St. Vincent DePaul resale, which is run by Catholic charities and has a bit everything.

There are many churches and schools, cafes and nightclubs, and restaurant row area of Barton Springs Road is just a half mile or so to the east, and includes well-known restaurants such as Shady Grove, Romeo, Green Mesquite, Chuy, and Austin Java. Guests can enjoy the frozen cream Sandy, an Austin landmark, or Italian food at Vinny, both of which are even closer in the neighborhood on the east side of Lamar on Barton Springs and within walking distance for most residents.

Even the downtown is a short walk through the sidewalks or pedestrian bridges both Congress and South First Street, which continues to Guadalupe Street across the river, and the whole area is also accessible by city transport as in buses and subway Cape Dillos, which are free. The Travis Heights neighborhood is one of your best paris in the Austin area for the quality of life it offers both visitors and residents.
